Bear trap?

How in the hell do you step into a bear trap in the middle of floor in an empty warehouse? Honestly. I know he was running and distracted but if he was THAT inattentive he would have run into walls or out the window or something.

Really. It was just too much.

A bear trap.

In the middle of the floor.

He runs perfectly into it. It was worse than the quintessential "woman falls and sprains ankle while being chased". Actually it somewhat fits with the character. He wasn't the brightest bulb even when he had time to think about things before the jumps started.

He had been repeatedly warned by his sister and teacher that too much time travel would damage his brain, so by the end of the film he had accumulated sufficient mental confusion, allowing him to stumble and totter.

If he had not been caught in the bear trap, then he would not have encountered his sister at that moment, and she would not have revealed her own time travel scheme.

This was a rare occurrence known as the Bear Trap Effect.

but what was the purpose of having a bear trap in an abandoned factory in the first place? how many bears are in Detroit?

I would assume his sister, who also time travels, put the trap there because she knew exactly where he would step. I thought it was stupid too until it was revealed the sister time travelled.
