Strange New Worlds Will Be ‘Optimistic and More Episodic,’ Creators Say (Variety)

But it will, according to co-creator and executive producer Akiva Goldsman, hew more closely to the original Kirk-era “Star Trek” in structure and tone than those other recent additions to the franchise have.

“We’re going to try to harken back to some classical ‘Trek’ values, to be optimistic, and to be more episodic,” Goldsman tell Variety. “Obviously, we will take advantage of the serialized nature of character and story building. But I think our plots will be more closed-ended than you’ve seen in either ‘Discovery’ or ‘Picard.'”

“Discovery,” the first of the All Access series, broke with past “Star Trek” iterations by being the first to tell a highly serialized story. “Picard,” which premiered this year, followed suit, and presented a more skeptical view of the future than its humanist predecessors did.

“Strange New Worlds” spins off from Season 2 of “Discovery,” which saw the titular starship roll up on the Enterprise and its pre-Kirk crew. For the new series, Anson Mount, Rebecca Romijn and Ethan Peck will reprise their performances as Capt. Pike, Number One and Mister Spock — played in the original series by Jeffrey Hunter, Majel Barrett and Nimoy, respectively.

I have no hope for this one. So if it's great I'll be BLOWN THE FFFF OUT.

I might give this show a chance, but I don't have high hopes for it :`(. I'd love to see what Captain Pike got to experience before Capt. Kirk took over the Enterprise, because honestly, Capt. Pike deserves his own story. He was, after all, a role model for Kirk, and Kirk looked up to him during his Academy years. Plus, in this day and age, nobody would have issues with a female Number One (I so hope she gets a proper name in this story).

Alex Kurtzman expands on Goldsman's statement.

The executive producer in charge of the Star Trek Universe gave an overview of how Strange New Worlds would have a different style and tone from Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Picard:

> I think Strange New Worlds, under the guidance of Henry Myers and Akiva Goldsman, it’s going to be a return in a way to TOS [Star Trek: The Original Series]. We are going to do stand-alone episodes. There will be emotional serialization. There will be two-parters. There will be larger plot arcs. But it really is back to the model of alien-of-the-week, planet-of-the-week, challenge-on-the-ship-of-the-week. With these characters pre-Kirk’s Enterprise. I think what people responded so much to in all three characters is this kind of relentless optimism that they have. And that they are at the young phase of their careers.

During the Deadline event, there was no update on the status for Strange New Worlds, but in other recent panels, Kurtzman has revealed that a writers’ room is already at work on Strange New Worlds. As of July, they had already broken the stories for ten episodes, indicating the first season would have ten episodes. And last week Kurtzman stated that the show is expected to go into production in 2021.-

writers' room

And already it's doomed. The reason Trek worked in the past, with different stories, was that it had a lot of different writers coming up with individual episode scripts. Writers' rooms always just end up going serialization or they end up in a repetitive rut. There will be no sense that each story has its own flavor and originality.

The vast majority of TNG episodes were written by a handful of people: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0092455/fullcredits

I like the sound of this. The Captain Pike episodes was a story arc I particularly enjoyed with Star Trek: Discovery and I'd prefer an episodic approach.

They already had 3 chances to make a good Star Trek Show. The Problem with Discovery and Picard. Is not necessarily serialized. Its there badly written. I doubt this show going be any different
