Brilliant film, could have done without the jesus crap though..

What Moore failed to mention was the amount of money religion makes and how most of them are just as bad as the greedy corporations that were featured. Just take a look at how much money is invested in the vatican or that looney ted haggardism religion.

For a seemingly intelligent man he seems to be showing religion in a good light. Everything else he presents in his films is otherwise undeniable fact or makes a very good point about how the world is being run.

First of all, not all religions are the same. Second of all, while there are certainly plenty of faults among religious groups, the focus of this film was capitalism. Moore was simply asking whether or not capitalism is compatible with Christianity. Obviously some people think it is, while others disagree. From an economic standpoint, there isn't a single religious group in the world as destructive as Merrill Lynch, Goldman Sachs, BP, Wal-Mart, Berkshire-Hathaway, etc.

Great, but who said they were the same? There's certainly similarities, enough for my point to stand - that religion is not innocent of capitalist greed.

Well, I suppose there are some individuals who use religion for the sole purpose of making money. Those people are hypocrites. Although I think you're overestimating the profitability of religion. I don't care for Ted Haggard, but whatever money he makes pales in comparison to the many billions that American banks bring in by screwing over hardworking people.

The banking business at least provides a service, namely the provision of money to buy things now and pay for them later. This service should indeed be valued and provide a profit. Michael Moore's point on banking is unrestrained banking derivatives and unbusinesslike lending practices are criminal.

Religion on the other hand, is a business that provides nothing, but costs plenty. At no time does it deliver anything of value to it's clients. It does provide hope but, like the conman, it fails to deliver.

Weighing the possible good of both businesses, I have to side with the banks. Much of the time they get it right, while religion guarnatees to get it wrong.

The United Nations and the Catholic Church are the two organisations that give the most money to charity in the world, so that schools and hospitals etc. can be built in poor countries.

I'd rank that as contributing to society.

I believe Michael Moore's point in using religion in his argument has more to do with who his target of attack, the conservative American and the systems they support. If Michael Moore wants to prove conservatives wrong and given that most conservatives are christian, it's a strong point to make when you claim that religion is on your side to people who claim to be religious people.

reply

His use of religion is to counter the claims made by the right wing (republicans and such) that jesus is on their side.
You can just about shut most people up by using religion.
Here he says think what the bible actually says.
The financially bankrupt people should use that knowledge to attack the morally bankrupt.
Of course, i believe that religion was created by powerful people to control the commoners, but sometimes it takes religion to fight against the unjust too.

Correct. Moore doesn't say "I believe in the Bible/Jesus" nor profess love for church, he, like I do most of the time when chatting with profound church believers, questions those who blatantly wave Jesus' flag but are walking a total different path while pointing the bible: we, as child (most of the time we didn't have a choice) are thought by the very church some of the bible "truths" to be law. Yet, you see people like Bush and many powerful man in the name God and Jesus
do things that neither God or Jesus are pictured doing in the teachings the church gives you.
