The Buggy Bunny review. The Super Mario 3 vs Super Mecha Death Christ 2000 B.C 4.0 Beta. Sh!t Pickle playing Master Chu And The Drunkard Hu. The Friday, Elm Street, Halloween and TCM epics.
I could go on and on. Such great, funny and classic episodes. Yet every one of the 2009 videos from Moonwalker to the new The Odyssey one with "Nurdy Turd" have been crap. He's not Angry Video Game Nerd anymore...just a moaning unfunny git.
Come one James, either kill the character off as he is not AVGN anymore or get back to the old magic. I'm not saying the episodes need to be 20 min mini movie epics...they just need to be funny again.
You have provided me and others with HOURS of free entertianment from AVGN to really interesting documentaries and film reviews. Of which I shall personaly be eternaly greatful for.
But AVGN is your greatest creation...and he's now crap. You know what's bulls!ht? AVGN.
The greatest trick the Devil ever pulled was convincing the world he is God.
I think he's still good, it's just that he's had to work with such mediocre material that he made the nest with what he got there.
I mean, you can only say so much about a console with no sound or graphics, and a poor import of a Japanese PC game will have some flaws in it that would've been an otherwise flawless game, and a particular console that had a peripheral that refused to work, showing all the lost potential he could've had with that.
I actually like many of his newer reviews mainly because he doesn't put annoying guest stars in them or disgusting scatalogical moments like he did in some of his reviews. I personally thought the Moonwalker review was hilarious.
1) his nasty jokes - what ever happened to "I'll rather eat sh!t or suck farts than play this game" that was like his trademark! now he doesn't say that much, or at all! The reason why his review of Deadly Towers is one of my favorites is because of the amount of generic jokes.
2) His passion (Anger) for reviewing games - in his last videos he doesn't sound that passionate about his reviews, he just describes the concept and the flaws in a rather boring and monotonous way, like it's a documentary or something. Again the reason why I like most of the old reviews is because of phrases like: "you touch the top of the building you die, you touch the floor you die, too far to the left you die, too far to the right you die, you die, you die you die you die you die you die you die you die you die you die you die you die you die!" (Silver Surfer) or my favorite "look how much room, how can you be stuck when there is sooooo muuch roooooomm!" (Superman 64)
3) the ending - remember when at the end of his reviews he would get in a fight with a life-size version of whatever monster he was fighting in a game, or find a way to destroy the game in a way that was related to the gameplay such as destroying the ghostbusters game with a protonpack, or sending the superman 64 game to the moon wearing a superman costume, or blowing up the cartridge of Die hard game. he should do that stuff again.
AVGN, if by some slight chance you are reading this, please take this into consideration and get back on track, i don't care if it takes more than two weeks to release your next review, but please have the quality you had before.

I guess he didn't want that gimmick to get stale. If all he did was swear endlessly, saying the same words over and over, they would lose meaning and might turn people off.
you know, im gonna have to take back my last reply, now that i've watched some of his videos again, i do have to say they are not bad. I just didn't remember them much because they are new, but they do have the AVGN style we all like, the two part Jaguar review was great, as well as Metal Gear and Terminator 1, The only one that was lacking a little was the very last one, terminator 2, so i made a mistake and assumed pretty quickly that he has been lacking in all his videos, but it was only this one. And it wouldn't be fair to judge him only on one review, so im gonna take back my last comment and keep watching new AVGN stuff.
If someone read the last reply, i apologize for the inconvenience.
A few months ago, he was starting to look a bit worn out in his videos and had gained some weight. He appears to be on the road to recovery now, whatever problems he was going through.
I agree, I have watched all the recent ones now. While I do still feel the earlier ones of the year were a bit crap. the latter parts have really picked up.
the Terminator ones onward have been good, "Plummbers" and "Godzila" were great...and he brought back Bugs Bunny!!! Just watched the first part of his Halloween specials on Castlevainia, and I liked it. Seems James is back on form for the the last half of 09.
The greatest trick the Devil ever pulled was convincing the world he is God.
I think James is trying to keep the character fresh and interesting. If all he did was play really bad games, say "fvck" over and over and drink beer, it would get old after a while and people would just get tired of it. The Nerd would just be a one-note character who would get very uninteresting. Sure it's hilarious when he curses and drinks constantly, but there has to be something else. This is probably why he's starting to give us backstories on games and movies, so we can get something out of the videos instead of just opinions.
I thought Nerdy Turd was hilarious. Every time James would vent frustration at a game, Nerdy Turd would simply respond with "thhpppppppppppppppppp!!!". I'm laughing now, just thinking about it. Great stuff.
At one point I too thought the episodes were getting worse.. They were too long, and had too many fighting scenes etc. But of course you get bored when you have seen +50 episodes..
Now I have realized they are still very good. The Castlevania episodes are my favorites. Earlier he did episodes like Wally Bear, they were 4 minutes, and nobody didn't care about the game. Now he reviews Street Fighter 2010, and he shows another SF games and even consoles like TurboGrafx. I love when he focuses more on hardware.. The Pong episode was great.
It's always exciting when you see there's a new episode, and it's about Ninja Gaiden or Action 52. You know it's gonna be good, and it's 15-25 minutes.
Of course his movie reviews, top ten lists and Monster Madness are also very good, maybe even better than AVGN stuff.
I don't think any of you have the right to complain about his videos, he has evolved over time to become more educational and less poop joke, graphic. I don't think he gets paid very well to do this and he has to share it with Mike Matie probably because he is a big part of this too. He is always editing a lot of videos at once and he doesn't have to be *beep* Michelangelo with every video he produces.
Ya know, I understand everyone has the right to their own opinions, but seriously people expect waaaay too much from this guy. I mean c'mon, he's started his own cult-following by himself just by doing something for fun. And he has an original type of humor and demeanor that 99% of everyone else can't pull off convincingly as he can. His new episodes in my opinion are just great. I watch AVGN not just for the jokes and dialogue but also because he shows alot of games I vaguely remember and some I've never seen and he puts an interesting take on them. He's also mature enough to give credit where it is due for alot of games. People need to realize he's just a man. Also, what if he did have the same ending every time or he was over the top with his ranting EVERY time? Then people would complain about that. He's doing a great job for being just one man doing something that he likes to do and he does it for us! People should be more thankful. You should try to make even a single video with your own original script and see how well people receive it.
