Question about the Derby County win over Leeds

I was unclear on why Coach Clough was in the "clubhouse" during their win over Leeds. Was that some sort of strategy or the owner telling him not to show up on the sidelines? I was unable to 'rewind' the movie and totally missed what was happening. I missed something.

On the DVD, there is a scene (in "Deleted Scenes" section), that was edited out of the film. In that scene, they are 0-1 down at HT, and Clough berates the team for not following the directions he gave them just before the match. Realising that they were just nervous and overawed by Leeds, he leaves a bottle of brandy in the locker room, and says [in anger] that no one can go out to play unless the bottle is emptied. Then in frustration he goes to his room...

That is an interesting strategy. Can't see that happening today, although the Boston Red Sox pretended they did this when they won the World Series in '04 or whatever. But I just did not understand why the head coach was in the locker room/clubhouse during that Leeds game.

He couldn't bear the tension. Clough was renowned for his "eccentric" tactics when managing Derby and Forest. Ultimately, it led to his downfall at Wembley when he refused to give his Forest players a pep talk before extra time and sat aloof in the stand while his opposite number, Terry Venables, geed up Spurs. This led Forest losing a Cup final they should have won.

I read an article on Clough shortly after he died and one of his players from the Notts Forest team told a story how they were losing a game and at half time Clough opened the door and all he said was "Sorry, my fault, picked the wrong team" and left. Forest came back to win 2-1. Read into that what you will.

i think that's what the film captures, his weird way of getting to the players, he was a master at it and a fantastic manager and that's all he needed to say to the players

When will people realise we do not own this planet, we are merely the lease holders...
