The Clough-Taylor intimacy SPOILERS

I read the book in 2007 and saw the film today. Peter Taylor is not in the book nearly as much as in the film. I, like several other people I knew, laughed a bit at the Clough-Taylor relationship in the book, which seems too intense at times and portrayed Taylor as very submissive.

I liked the film, but it seems to descend into farce with Taylor putting food into Clough's mouth and Clough saying "I love you" to Taylor. The dominant thread of the film is that the two of them need each other to function; that's a much smaller part of the book.

REAL LIFE SPOILERS........

That wouldn't have happened, it was done for cinematic effect.

Clough and Taylor went their seperate ways, as Clough left Brighton and went to Forest and Taylor stayed at Brighton and soon joined Clough at Forest.

It was years later they had a major falling out, as Taylor left Forest announcing retirement, only to end up back at Derby a couple of months later. Clough never forgave Taylor and they didn't speak for years, right up until Taylor died in 1990.

nearly right.
clough & taylor excepted bambers offer & took over at Brighton in 73.
clough then left for leeds, taylor stayed & then joined him at forest early in 75.

They fell out over the transfer of John Robertson I believe.

This book was regarded as "fiction based on fact" - in other words, its pretty much made up. David Pearce used real names and real events, made up a whole bunch of stuff in between and wrote the book. That's why there was such uproar about the novel.

My opinion is that the film is a retelling of the LEGEND of Clough's 44 days at Leeds and his relationship with Peter Taylor.

Not what ACTUALLY happened because it's probably not as interesting and engrossing as the legend that's been passed down generations.

They did indeed fall out over John Robertson and it was one of Cloughie's regrets that he never made it up with Peter Taylor before Taylor died. I seem to remember it was quite a moving part in Cloughie's autobiography.

And I thought this movie was total *beep*
