For the clash of personalities. Clough was at his lowest ebb at that point and Leeds at their peak. each went in the opposite direction afterwards - Leeds into a decline that Howard Wilkinson only temporarily halted and Clough onto further glory - and decline. I daresay his rise and fall at Forest covered in the book "AS LONG AS YOU DON'T KISS ME" will also make a compeling filom. Clough at leeds was the irresistable force meeting the immovable object.

If Leeds' board backed Clough instead of the players, It may very well be Leeds United instead of Manchester United at the top of today's football pile - I reckon Clough was THAT good - remember he had a phenomenal career without ever managing a "big" club (44 days excepted.)

Clough needed the backing, to get rid of Bremner,Hunter,Reaney,Madeley and possibly Giles as well, they were on the way out by 1974, the fans would have come round when Leeds were playing like Forest were in 1977. I think He could have built his team around Harvey,McQueen,Lorimer,Clarke,Jordan and the Grays (although his later experience with Frankie suggests possibly not.) Personally I believe He would have been great if Man Utd had appointed Him instead of Frank O' Farrell in 1971.

God will forgive them, He'll forgive them and allow them into Heaven. I can't live with that.

He'd've never settled for david Harvey. He'd've bought Peter Shilton asap. Peace's novel hints that he was trying to destroy everything Revie built up regardless. He needed Peter Taylor to lean on, spot players and watch his back.

As a Man United supporter of over 30 years I would have loved to have seen Cloughie at Old Trafford in his peak.

Albino - the right time to have got him would have been in 1977 after Tommy Doc was sacked for nailing the physio's wife !!

Forest had just got promoted the the old First Division.

But our board typically went for the ultimate Yes Man in Dave Sexton instead.

And of course Clough then won the league in his first season followed by back to back European Cups !!

Mind you - if we'd had Cloughie back in 1986 then maybe we would never have got Fergie !!

Being a Forest fan, whenever someone mentions Brian Cloughs name, i have to smile! Being from near Middlesbrough myself,(Cloughies home town), i know how much he meant to football in general. If Brian had never come to Notts Forest, i dont think they would have won the championship, never mind two european cups?

This was Brians Major trophy Record at Forest

77/78 Div 1 League Champions
77/78 League Cup winners

78/79 European Cup Winners
78/79 League Cup Winners

79/80 European Cup Winners
79/80 European Super Cup Winners

88/89 League Cup Winners

89/90 League Cup Winners

Unfortunately Cloughie never got his hands on the F A Cup, Being beat by Spurs in the 91 Cup Final.

They had so many chances to appoint him at United, but I think they knew he'd have walked in and told Busby it was his way from now on.

Liverpool would have still dominated English and European football under Paisley from the mid 1970s through the 1980s even had the Leeds board backed Clough. Liverpool were just a better team and all round outfit with better foundations (laid down by Shankly)for a continuous dominant run than Leeds.

The Leeds players were coming to the end of their reign by 1974/75, with or without Cloughie. They had passed their peak as players. Happens to all teams. Even Clough couldn't manage to bring the dynasty effect to Forest. Forest had an excellent 3 or 4 seasons or so then kind of drifted away once those players passed their peaks. Clough couldn't keep Forest at the top.

Clearly Clough wasn't a manager for continued success/dynasties over long periods. His better forte was building up teams from low points and bringing them great quick success.
