Is there any science fiction screenwriter who knows how BIG space is?

Space is empty. Solar systems are light-years apart. The likelihood that a ship would collide with an asteroid close enough to a planet that it can do an emergency landing is infinitesimal. Unless Earth was the destination, which doesn’t seem to be the case (and if it were, wouldn’t the freaking pilot be awake for the final approach?), it is extremely unlikely that the ship would be inside a solar system.

This is a very common mistake in science fiction movies and TV shows. There is always a planet nearby when you need one.

You are forgetting that they made a movie about the character just because it was so extraordinary that he managed to land safely.

Besides, you are using probability wrong. It can only be used for predictions while this event clearly already happened (in the reality of the movie)

Are you this disgruntled about all things that have a low probability? You must be terrible at birthday parties when talking about lottery dreams.

Probably one of the reasons it's called science FICTION and not "NOVA".

It bugged me also when it happened. Really avoidable if they just make it that the expedition was headed to earth in the first place. I got over it quick though. This is a sci Fi flick that is heavy on the fiction and light on the science. I enjoyed it still cause I just like dinosaurs too much.

And what are the chances that 65 Million years ago there was a planet at the other edge of the galaxy with humans at the same stage of evolution as we are, speaking the same way as modern Americans and have spaceships that can travel faster than the speed of light? Nah, instead, let's focus on the small possibility that a spaceship could collide with an asteroid. Now, that is just unbelievable.
