I actually like his character, and find him funny.
Sometimes (not always) I think his rants start from at least him meaning well. Like when he tried to dump Kerry at Neil's party. His reasons were actually quite chivalrous, as he didn't want to string her along and wanted to be upfront about his desires. Maybe he shouldn't have done it in a public place, but also he wasn't to know that her dad has just died. His protests that he'd done nothing wrong were true, but it ended up going well over the top and he got carried away. I can see a young and awkward teenager acting that way, if he thought he was in the right, to be honest.
Also, his rant in the pub in the first episode. He went too far, but he did have a right to be a bit aggrieved that everybody else that was clearly underage was getting served and not him.
Though all the characters are funny in their own ways, I often find Jay's behaviour is less often coming from a good place. And Simon's too, on the occasions that he throws an absolute tantrum over nothing at all.
