Just saw it

I thought it was a really great, and challenging film. its maybe the most minimalist sci-fi movie ever made, but I'm not sure it really is even sci-fi anymore since this technology pretty much exists now anyways.

There is very little dialogue overall, and a lot of quiet moments where the only sound is the waves crashing on the shore. Its beautifully shot and acted, especially Eva Green. Matt Smith is very good to.

I loved it! God, how haunting! Now, I need it on Blu-Ray!

reply

I absolutely loved this movie...I was just wondering when it was going to come out here in the U.S...I know they have a Russian dubbed version out, but I was wondering if we were gonna have a release here in the US...I hope so...and I hope it comes out soon because I really want to buy this film...Eva Green is just phenomenal...I swear this woman never disappoints...

reply

Well, 'Arsene Lupin' disappointed me... I hated that film! But everything else was great!

reply

Ok...I'll give you that. Arsene Lupin was pretty horrible, but I don't believe it had anything to do with her...I blame the direction and the overall way the movie was made...I know this because like you said, everything else she's ever made has been great...I mean even Franklyn was a great film, and a lot of people hated it...Idk, she's just wonderful at acting...I'm glad there's still top quality actresses out there like her who's versatility is just phenomenal...you don't really see that anymore...

You're right in theory the man cloning is posible, but it's immoral and there is actually no reason to do it, since the clone is a different person from the initial one! The only thing that stays the same is the exterior image...
I haven't see the movie and don't get me wrong I like Eva Green and her film choices so far but I thing that this movie shouldn't exist!

It's egoist and stupid of Eva's character to have her boyfriend cloned because she didn't want to admit that he died! What's that? She loved his image and give a *beep* for his soul?

reply

"the clone is a different person from the initial one" - that is precisely the point (or one of the points) the film analyses. Please do not judge the film before having seen it. It's unfair to the film and also to yourself.

Thinking that cloning is "immoral" is one thing - most people do - but deciding that a film "shouldn't exist" because it explores the issue is a bit ridiculous, don't you think?

reply

Exactly prettymaryk,

Slavery is immoral, does that mean any movie about slavery shouldn't exist???

reply

You should watch it.

The movie is all about questioning the morality of what she is doing. And the movie doesn't take sides, it just presents the scenario. Because despite what you may think, this could very easily become a reality. Plenty of scientific advances that defy ethics go ahead anyways.

The movie shows that people are selfish, and can't let go.

But there is an even more disturbing issue that she raises the clone as her son, but she's still sexually attracted to him.

reply

I disagree that cloning is in general immoral. I see instances where it is immoral, but not generally. Nature does it all the time - and you get twins. Nothing immoral about twins, even though they are even born at the same time and learn much of the same things.

reply

The difference is that nature doesn't share the same inclination to abuse that power as we humans do.

reply

since you feel this movie shouldn't exist, i think that all versions/copies/whatever of it should be blasted out of existance. after all, you are the one who should be allowed to decide such matters for the entire world. your sense of morality/taste must be vastly superior to anyone else's, right?

btw: who are you?? never mind, on with the cinematic slaughter of things you neither like nor approve of. i look forward to the upcoming book burnings!

i realise this is an old thread and you'll probably never come back to answer this, but i'm curious as to exactly why you find cloning to be immoral.

Like the OP, I've just finished watching this movie today, online. It reminded me of another movie about human cloning - Never Let Me Go - adapted from Ishiguro's novel. Like that other movie, there's profound sadness and loneliness too in this one. But the character development in Never Let Me Go is fuller, I think than in this one. I didn't mind at all the slow pacing, however I found the decision made by Rebecca to go through with it as quite implausible considering she and Tommy 1 haven't quite established that much of a relationship in the short span of time when they reunited after twelve years of separation. I didn't see any depth in their connection other than youthful attraction. Perhaps it's the irrational part in all of us that's the culprit ? And bringing him up as his son and him knowing her as his mom truly created more complexities for the second Tommy, when all along she didn't intend their relationship to be that way. Despite all those, the movie was able to hold my attention, Eva Green's performance as Rebecca was excellent and the actor Matt Smith as the adult Tommy was quite interesting, sometimes coming on as obnoxious to me and at times charming. The scene where he was confused by the revelations was quite touching to me.

Truth inexorably, inscrutably seeks and reveals Itself into the Light.

reply

I think its about OBSESSION, not real love. And sometimes people meet and connect as childhood sweethearts, and later reconnect. But it has a lot to do with Rebecca's personality - she was an obviously lonely, withdrawn little girl, and Tommy seemed to be her only connection - and for her it was inevitable. But what she does is not love! This movie has some weird similarities to Errol Morris's movie "Tabloid," which interestingly is about another case where a woman became so obsessed with a man that she stalked and kidnapped him! She is obviously off her rocker, and a very strange person! The really strange part is that this woman gets attached to a pet dog of hers, and after it dies, she has it cloned in South Korea!! For real!!! I think the psychological similarities between these two women are very compelling - and the cloning issue is trying to "possess" something, to own something, that you can really never possess or own - the soul of another human being!

Ssssshh! You'll wake up the monkey!

reply

i think she had misplaced guilt about tommy 1's death and thought she could rectify it by recreating him.

what i thought was fairly stupid was her never telling him he was a clone til he was a grown man. o.O i think the best time to do it would have probably been the day after his sad friendless birthday.

reply

I just finished watching this and I just couldn't get past the fact that she was sexually attracted to her own son.

The movie dragged a lot but I know it was done for dramatic effect. But I was totally flabbergasted when the movie finally ended with their copulation.

I got the feeling she was a virgin. Is that ever made clear? I wondered why it looked like she was going to have a c-section, but I think that was just amniocentis, so I have no idea how she delivered T2.

It gives you a lot to think about, then again, I would really have liked to know if Rebecca's intent was to get pregnant with his child, or to have him grow and start off where they ended.

But then again, I'm sorry, a 40somthing woman getting preggers after having unprotected sex 1 time seems really against the odds.

Also, wasn't he against cloning, and weren't they on their way to mess up someplace that did that? Can't quite remember, but if it was, then that really adds another dimension of creepiness.

reply

Yes, she was a virgin!

reply

yes! as soon as she spoke with his parents about cloning him, i told my husband "isn't that the very thing he was so greatly against? that's pretty awkward..."

Minimalist sums it up for me. I felt like i was watching a Terrance Mallick flick at times.

simply marvelous! one of the best films i've seen in years! splendorous photography!

This was a very interesting movie. Much of it happens with little dialogue, but because of the way events take place you're aware of what's happening.

Eva green's character couldn't ask for sex, neither could she even demand anything from him since he is his own person. Earlier in his youth he makes fun of clones from conversations he'd heard in school, so he was unaware of who he was, and seemed to dislike clones based on friends at school.
The cloned dinosaur is a hint of the some science fiction aspect. We can assume that perhaps other animals have been brought back.

Very interesting movie, and well done.

reply

the dino isn't a clone, it's a pleo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pleo) and they're real! i kind of want one, i'd be so nice to it...
