Question about the very end of the movie
At the end, there's a veeeeery long shot of Tommy walking away... and then the lights are switched on in one room of the house. Is there any sort of meaning ? It seemed symbolical...

Okay, thank you :) At first, I wondered if it meant she was going to this room to kill herself or something like that but then I realized it wouldn't have much sense, it wouldn't be in her character to do that. So if she lets go, it's a much more positive end, I prefer it ! :) What she did may be wrong for many reasons but I could not help but feel miserable for her and hope that it was going to be okay at the end.

Oh you mean in the beginning of the film which is most likely the end of the film?
Because at the end with the light in the house it was literally the last scene in the movie.

So she got pregnant with Tommy2's baby?
shareDidnt anybody else notice that the very first scene of the movie is basically the actual ending? In the opening scene of the movie we see Rebecca sitting on the porch of the beachhouse, pregnant saying "just because you went away doesnt mean that you're not still here" and thanking him for "the gift that he gave her only at the very end" which was what she lacked in the first place, meaning after he died. This pregnancy was the hope that she never got to begin with and the reason why she had to resort to the cloning.. At least that's what I make of it. But in any case, this scene at the beginning of the movie is clearly taking place after Tommy, her son-clone, left in the end.
shareOh, my GOD you're right. I had to go back and re-watch the beginning. She was at the stilt house and her hair was longer when she was that pregnant with Tommy 2.0. Thanks for pointing that out!
shareThis whole thing was executed wrong and sloppy and that is why it sort of doesn't make much sense on the narrative but that is what I took away from it too. She is a virgin this whole time. She longed for her long-lost love. They finally meet up as adults. A day or 2 later he passes in the accident. At that point, she has emotionally checked out. She immediately goes back into the jeep not being able to properly process his passing.
Since this is "sci/fi" they introduce cloning as an option with almost no real explanation as to why/how this is a thing in this low-tech narrative.
We could have used some visual clues that this is a technologically evolved society. Maybe like the teddy bear from AI. Something "advanced" to show us humans are very capable with tech but lack normal human skills like grieving a lover.
This movie really needed a Black Mirror and/or American Horror/touch to it and maybe a cohesive script...
That is EXACTLY what I took from it also. I thought maybe in the end they might again show a shot of her sitting there pregnant
Be careful what you wish for, you just might get it.
I too thought that she became pregnant by "cloned" Tommy and was finally having the child she should have had with "original" Tommy. She clearly was still young enough to get pregnant...it was an intriguing movie!
shareIf I recall correctly, none of the lights are ever turned in the house throughout the film.
The light in the blue darkness of the ocean environment represents a new hope for Rebecca, a hope that she can now start living.
I took it as now she can let go and move on and get out of that dark place
shareSo at the end, is she impregnated by her clone-son? I read a review that actually said she was a virgin - that she had never had sex with the original Tommy before he died. and there was blood in that scene! That would explain some of the longing. So she will now actually have the son she should have had with the original Tommy, but had after raising her clone-Tommy and then finally consummating the original love?
This starts making me dizzy after a while!
Ssssshh! You'll wake up the monkey!
Yes, I think that that was the main idea. She has probably wanted a child from Tommy 1.0 and despite all of the obstacles she get it.
shareI read a review that actually said she was a virgin - that she had never had sex with the original Tommy before he died. and there was blood in that scene!I gathered this as well. She seemed in a bit of pain and they kept showing what LOOKED like blood on her fingers. Also Tommy 2.0 was a C-section.
You can still continue to have children before menopause. Menopause ranges from 50s to 60s unless you're really premature & had it earlier.

12 years of isolation with no friends makes for a insane person. This whole movie was insane and makes me wonder what runs through the mind of the writer. You call Tommy a friend, she was wanting a lover from her own child. Pretty sick. I do not see this movie as any art at all.

That was my thought exactly, that she was a virgin. Makes sense with the painful penetration and the fact that Tommy2 was born by C-Section.
I also had an odd thought about the light being turned on at the end. The only other "stark white" scene that comes to mind was scene in the clinic when she was artificially impregnated with the T2 embryo. Perhaps the light in the house was signifying the second impregnation.

Me too, that she is likely going to go through it all again, what an exhausting thought!
When you get up in the morning, how do you decide what shade of black to wear? (Shallow Grave)
Missed the very beginning so didn't figure out that particular ending.
