what if they reversed the roles?

Epicness!

Well, it's pretty much impossible for a dude to give birth to a child...so that wouldn't really have worked, would it?

Nah I mean a man raising his true love from birth -- epic movie no?

Isn't that a subplot in the new Twilight movie?

...it sickens me that I know even that little bit of information about the Twilight movies.

Don't try to cash in love, that check will always bounce.

The dead girlfriend could still be cloned, and gestate in a surrogate mother's womb. Then, he could raise the child as his own daughter. It'd be essentially the same story, but with gender reversal.

I think that version of this film would also be very interesting. "Epic"? Sure, why not.

It really is an endlessly fascinating topic!

Ssssshh! You'll wake up the monkey!

The bathtub scene would have been even creepier.

this was already done, a book written and movie made.. "Lolita" .. how to raise a child in order to love them as your partner..

the movie/the book discusses the moral problems with this and why its not a problem also..

its sick to think about it, the problem is the child has rights-right? so you can't basically "sentence" a child to be your partner just like that.. its wrong to in my opinion do such a huge choice to a child that will not be able to resist you since you have all the power and the child has none.. but lets assume you will love this child 100% and provide for him such a loving relationship that nobody can.. just hypothetically lets imagine.. what would that mean? The child grows up, is full of confidence, falls in love physically with his/her mother/father and becomes a successful person in life with compassion and love and loyalty from his partner/dad/mother..

The problem with such thinking is, ... what supersedes what.. is Love the highest rule or is it freedom... if freedom is the one, then love must take a step back, if love is, one can argue this kind of "brining up your love partner" is okei..

we have to make a clear distinction from rape/paedophilia and what i describe here(which i think is btw repulsive anyway, just entertaining this idea for arguments sake)..

so even if you give all love and compassion and make a smooth transition from raising a child to loving your lover its a big problem since the child has no choice.. it is easily manipulated into such an arrangement.. even if there is love and the child obviously will love the seducer since why shouldn't he/she..its i think very immoral to rob a child a chance to figure out on its own what it wants.. so parents should remain parents.. guardians who make sure the child is equipped with morality, compassion, loving heart and then you hope for the best they find their love in life somewhere in our wide world..

I think it was done much earlier in de Sade's "Eugénie de Franval."

Also, has anyone seen the movie Old Boy? Very similar, but roles reversed.

I have seen "Old Boy" but I'm not sure that it's that similar to "Womb," if only because (IIRC) the protagonist engages in straight out incest with his sister, which leads another character into tricking him into incest with his daughter.

The creepy part of "Eugénie de Franval." (which was written in the 18th C, but apparently was also made into a film in the 1970s that I haven't seen & don't plan to see: http://m.imdb.com/title/tt0266515/)
and "Womb" (to a lesser extent) is the way the protagonists deliberately abuse their parental power for their own, rather sick ends.

In contrast, in "Old Boy" the only witting incest occurs between a pair of young children - an event that's pretty off, but not nearly as morally reprehensible.

the child ...it is easily manipulated into such an arrangement..

I didn't see that she manipulated the child into anything. It was as much his impulse as hers to engage in relations. There was a natural attraction between them, just as there was between her and Tommy1, which is only to be expected (if you thought about it, which she might not have), since Tommy2 was a clone.

The attraction just got stronger and stronger over the years, until finally it all spilled out. I didn't see her do anything to manipulate him, one way or another.

On the other hand, she didn't do anything to discourage that either.
