Like say they did the pub crawl but there was another obstacle like the jerks that used to bully them in high school are also trying to get to The Worlds End. And they have to get there first to get back at them.
Sounds ridiculous I know, but its still alot better than some aliens trying to wipe out the town all of a sudden.
Then I would have already seen it at my last high school reunion.

The next morning they would have found that Gary:

He hadn’t noticed the light had changed
A crowd of people stood and stared
They'd seen his face before,
But no one was really sure if he was once a Newton Haven lord.

shareYeah..the robots were just too ridiculous for me. I was loving the movie up until the point where they were discovered.
shareThere would have been nothing to drive the action or the characters if they didn't introduce the aliens/blanks. The guys would not have stayed with Gary that long on the crawl (they were ready to bail after pub 4 even before they found out he was lying about his mom).
Like the zombies in Shaun of the Dead and NWA in Hot Fuzz, extraordinary circumstances challenge the way the characters are living and force the characters to develop.
Doesn't sound ridiculous at all. They should have done that, but I don't think the writers had anything funny, or interesting to write this time around and opted out for a soulless and unfunny action movie that completely fell apart with the introduction of the aliens.

shareI agree the plot could have been improved and your suggestion of bullies is the default path. It definitely would have been better even if less original. But I say you take that a step further. You have the enemies from high school, and then the current generation of "cool" kids, debt collectors, drug dealers, ex-wives, mistresses, and etc. Each character having a different group hounding them but they each collide during the pub crawl.

I don't see why else they would have stayed with Gary, they were determined to leave after they found out he lied about his mom. That would have been the end of it right there.
