I wondered that, all I can think of is that it must've been the network. They knew the golden mile ended there and in their benevolence, left it for Gary.

Had to be the network. Also thought it may have been poison, before they replaced him.

Could have been that, or that they did not want him to use the beer tap so they would not activate the elevator and find the 'mothership' or base..
