Can somene explain the ending to me?

Was it a spoof of another film? and if so, what film?

reply

The way Gary looked and his sword in the final scene immediately made me think of Aragorn.

reply

How does that explain Gary with the Blanks? That's the only thing I didn't understand in the whole film.

(Well, that and how Andy - or any of them - was such a good fighter. And what happened to Oliver? When did he get replaced, or was he always that way?)

there is only water left to drink, in post-apocalyptic world, is why he orders waters

at least that's what I understood

reply

Oliver went to the gents and was presumably "taken" at that point. When he comes out he is all smiles and says "Have I missed anything?" - or something like that.

No he got replaced ages ago hence why he had no birthmark on his head hey explained that, well at least that's what j thought upon viewing the film he was quite clearly a blank before they started the mile.

reply

No, he gets switched in the toilets at that Pub, the birthmark thing was that the REAL Oliver had his birthmark removed with laser surgery, and once he becomes a Blank, it's back again.

reply

No because that's how they figured out which ones were blanks or not because they had no scars or any damages to them? So he was a blank before I think

reply

Nope sorry you're incorrect on this one, it's the fact that his birthmark returns that leads Gary to realize that Oliver is a blank... one point of the film is that each of the guys drops off the pub crawl at the same stage they did 20 years earlier.

reply

Didn't notice that until now! (The dropping off at the same points they did before)

reply

A homage to apocalyptic films in general, but also The Three Musketeers, remember earlier in the film when they're just starting off their road trip Gary refers to them being 'The Five Musketeers'.

Can't believe I missed that!

While the way Gary holds the sword is a reference to 'Lord Of The Rings', specifically one of the posters, the scene itself isn't really a reference to anything other than the film you just watched.
Gary spends the entire movie believing that if he can finish the Golden Mile he'll be happy at last, and his life will have some purpose. After all that turns out to be false, we see Gary is now drinking tap water like his friend, and to that end he now has a mob of blanks following him like his musketeers.
Gary's found a new purpose in life, and has a bunch of old friends helping him out, with their memories retaining that one incredible night, so many years ago.
