When the kids are sitting on the hill overlooking Newton Haven after their night out, there's a shooting star in the sky. That's the aliens arriving.

I think they mention in the film that the aliens/robots/blanks arrived on that night because of the mayhem caused by Gary and his friends. That was the final straw that caused them to intervene and 'save' humanity from themselves and prepare them for the network.
