It's even funnier when I tell fans of the movie and they hate to admit that I'm exactly right.

1. Hot tub time machine is far far funnier.
2. The movies are not remotely similar, this movie is about alien robots taking over the world, HTTM is about people going back in time.
Both movies have a group of friends drinking but thats where the similarities end. Its like saying the hangover is exactly like this movie.
It also has a lot in common with "The Watch" (2012).

Nah, it's based on the 1980s film "The Best of Times", with Robin Williams and Kurt Russell who try to relive the moment when their lives seemed to go off track... a big high school football game.
Okay, they added sci-fi elements, but the feelings, relationships, and emotional core of the film is eeeeeeerily similar.
