You seem to be under the delusion that every letter needs to end with "ee" so then why do you pronounce "R" as "Are" instead of "Ree". Or "Y" as "Why" instead of "Yee". What's so special about "Eff" that it doesn't need to end like "Fee"? Why isn't "H" pronounced "Hee"?
Also, English originated in England so technically Americans are the ones that fucked it up.
When someone asks you a question, it does not necessarily mean that they believe in or are delusional about what they asking about. I think Americans streamlined and simplified English if anything ... may be one of the few things we've done right.

It seems it comes from a French letter and earlier from Greek (according to a quick internet search)...
So Zed is closer to the earlier use, but Zee appeared in America a couple of hundred years ago so has been in use for a long enough time...
