or does the author offer his theory of what happened to fawcett?

The book ends by assuming that Fawcett died either because he was attacked by natives or because he was simply defeated by the harsh jungle. The author also believes that Fawcett was right about the existence of Z, although the city was destroyed long before Fawcett could have seen it.
