Any status since Brad Pitt left the project? Is it dead or what? I've been hoping they would make a movie about Fawcett for years. I wasn't too keen on the Pitt casting, but hopefully they will hire someone else that can pull it off.
I'd vote for an all time favorite, Gary Oldman. He's got the chops and could easily look like Fawcett.

"The children being kidnapped and enslaved isn't portrayed in a particularly malicious fashion."
Apparently, the film lives! There's a projected October 25, 2012 start date listed here: http://www.myentertainmentworld.com/mew/film_production_newlisting.htm l. Very surprising, but the source is a trustworthy industry-linked site and the scheduling coincides with the time James Gray could be finished with Low Life given the rate at which he usually works, so there's little reason to doubt it.
The film would be a match up of a great book and a great writer/director, so I'm very glad it appears to be back on. I agree that Gary Oldman is a good pick for Fawcett, but given that Brad Pitt pulled out because of a scheduling conflict, perhaps he'll appear in the film after all.
And IonCinema has put The Lost City of Z on their Most Anticipated list:
Director: James Gray Writer: James Gray Producers: Dede Gardner, Anthony Katagas, Jeremy Kleiner U.S. Distributor: Paramount Pictures Cast: Benedict Cumberbatch, Robert Pattinson
During Cannes 2013, where Gray premiered his latest film, The Immigrant (which should see theatrical released sometime in 2014), it was announced that he would be working on an untitled sci-fi project. That appears to be something still brewing as not long after, news broke about this long gestating project based on the book by David Grann, something that was once rumored to be a project for Brad Pitt, who is now producing.
With Cumberbatch and Pattinson both on a hot streak with their career selection, this union with Gray should definitely be a hot commodity in the coming year.
Gist: Based on the book by David Grann, “Lost City of Z” follows Percy Fawcett, a British colonial who disappeared in the 1920s while searching for a mythical city in the Amazon jungles of Brazil that he believed he discovered on a prior expedition.
Release Date: While it’s still listed as being in pre-production, we’re hoping this gets some traction soon, with Pattinson in high demand and several projects lined-up.
Brad Pitt is still producing. First set pics from shooting yesterday. Good vintage costuming. Charlie and two actors playing his children look like they're shooting a scene before he leaves for South America.
The Lost City of Z comes in at #3 on the FilmStage's 'most anticipated of 2016' list:
With a botched release by The Weinstein Company, The Immigrant didn’t make nearly the amount of money or receive the attention it deserved, but thankfully writer-director James Gray is back sooner than expected. His adaptation of David Grann’s 2009 novel Lost City of Z tells the true story of the adventures of explorer Percy Fawcett (Charlie Hunnam), who searched the Amazon for a mysterious city in the 1920s. It’s a harrowing tale that details horrendous hurdles and obstacles he had to get past. Starring alongside Hunnam will be Robert Pattinson and Sienna Miller, while cinematographer Darius Khondji (The Immigrant) will return to shoot the lush jungles that Pattinson and Hunnam will explore. Gray has shown a deft handling of tragedy and the surreal, so this is certainly a film to pay attention to later this year. – Bill G.
