"'Moneyball' was proven to be a farce. People in the game know it was just a Hollywood thing."

And Buck is wrong - John Henry brought in Bill James (the prime brain behind "moneyball" analytics) and went on to win 4 World Series after not having won one in over 80.

I've watched baseball for 60 years, and the biggest problem today is that teams are concentrating on "launch angle" and "exit velo" and not so much on bat control. Home runs or strikeouts is the metric. Launch angle hitters do well on middle of the rotation starters and middle innning relievers and put up good numbers, but in the playoffs, you run into better pitchers who don't give up many home runs. The best compromise is a team with three or four thumpers but another three or four "contact" hitters - what I call "tough outs". These are the guys who can handle the stick and give pitchers fits. Foul off 5 or 6 of there best pitches then dunk one over the infield. With guys on base, the starter is now pitching from the stretch and maybe getting rattled.
