Jonah Hill Oscar Nomination: Really?

What exactly did he do to earn an Oscar nomination for this role? What was so outstanding about his performance? I thought he was decent, but nothing spectacular enough to earn an Oscar nomination. What gives?

I'll admit he wasn't a standout, but watching him on screen, I never, ever once would connect him with... say... his character of Seth in Superbad. Totally different characters. Jonah Hill, the raunchy comedian or what have you, was not on screen. He was simply Peter Brand, Yale economist something something.

Oscar? I dunno. But very, very well acted.

I dont know what you expected from a character written like Peter Brand.

"Well Billy, the funny thing about my SABRMETRICS is that it's located on my cock."

"You know when you hear GMs say 'Ah man, I was so *beep* last night, I shouldn't have traded that guy?' We could be that mistake!"

award winning performance right there.

Jonah is okay by me but an oscar nod for his work in this movie I gotta say im not seeing it here either. He does have talent though

He totally deserved it. His performance is understated. Remember he's got a big front personality wise as he showed in Superbad. Look at his delivery when he explains his statistics theory to beane in the parking lot. The scene where he lets the player go. You only need a couple of stand outs for a supporting nomination.

Dunno, but I think he made a mistake in losing weight. For roles like these some extra pounds give him credence. He is never going to be the pretty boy anyway. Might as well be the every man of America. Then again losing weight always a good life choice non career wise.

I don't get it either.

I thought he was perfectly capable within the role but not Oscar-worthy. Even Brad Pitt didn't really deserve the nomination IMO.

agreed.

All I'm gonna say is this. Brad Pitt and Jonah Hill got Oscar noms for this mediocre film. Wheras Tom Hardy and Joel Edgerton were excluded for Warrior. I would have campaigned Edgerton for Supporting and given him Jonah's slot, and campaign Hardy for Lead and given him Pitt's spot.
