It's pretty obvious in the movie that they're not supposed to be living on his pay. It's explicit early on, when his parents do that silly duet rhyming toast: they wonder how Violet could go for a guy so goofy and "without a cent" (trying to rhyme with "intelligent").

Since she's a baby academic, it's not clear how they're getting by, but I suspect funds from one or the other sets of parents would be involved.

I think people just assume that cooks make a fortune because of a few celebrity reality tv shows but it's really hard to make a living in a kitchen. Actually the average salary in SF right now is about 15 bucks an hour.
