He actually didn't play the same character in all of them. He was in "I Love You Man," who was the exact opposite of Tom in this movie. In ILYM his character was a d-bag, non-commiting party type dude, and was a departure from the usual character he plays. Not that ILYM was a good movie or anything, but just sayin
He's not getting typecast - he's writing the same role for himself over and over. And he needs to stop.

This movie was so bad, just awful. It just wasn't funny at all.
But you are right - with stuff he hasn't written, he still plays the same guy.
