Why is Emily Blunt playing a Brit with an American sister???
I don't understand why she didn't play an American. So many Brits play Americas in film and TV and simply master the American accent.

shareThe actress is American, but she was using an English accent, maybe not too well. Also the mother is played by an Australian, Jacki Weaver with an English accent, As a native Australian and knowing her work at home I could hear her Aussie accent breaking through every now and then.
shareEmily Olivia Leah Blunt (born 23 February 1983) is an English actress.

Yeah, we know, but her sister wasn't American.
shareHer and her family being from England was part of the story. Her sister wasn't American.
I got punched in the face. What's your excuse?
Her sister wasn't American.
I didn't think her British accent was that bad.
"It's around 4 o'clock. We've been here since 12 o'clock. Five hours is like enough."
Why is it a prerequisite for her to have an American accent? That is the ONLY thing I found refreshing about this horrid film.
shareAlison Brie had an English accent in the movie. She was probably cast for her improv skills, which was great.
shareIf you want to hear Emily Blunt in an American accent watch Looper. She's great in it and her American accent in that movie is really good.
shareCall me stupid.. I thought both sisters had British accents.. Emily's was reals.. and the Sister Alison Brie from Mad Men was fake, yet sounded pretty good..

Brie did a great job with her accent. The reason why they cast her and not a British actress is for obvious reasons, because Brie's star has been on the rise ever since she was in "Community", plus "Mad Men" had started to take off.
shareUGH....her accent blew chunks. I like Alison Brie but when you're getting paid pretty good money to play a character with an accent different from your own either get it right or hire a dialect coach to help you with it.
It was all over the place and horribly inconsistent... Just plain lazy.
Anyone who thinks Alison Brie's accent is fine, or even good, is insane. It was atrocious.
shareI assume the OP was intending to take an ironic dig at Alison Brie's skill with the accent, and didn't really think the character was an American.
Anyone who thinks that Brie was speaking with an American accent has such a tin ear he's in no position to criticize anything.
I thought Allison Brie was pretty spot-on with her accent. She gets major props for imitating Emily Blunt's own accent instead of going for the generic stage school RP accent that most non-Brits try. The RP accent doesn't belong to any particular region - it's entirely a theatre voice.
As to why Emily Blunt plays a Brit, well why not? Good on the movie for being a little different. Emily Blunt also seems more marketable with her English accent. In most of her more famous roles - The Devil Wears Prada, The Adjustment Bureau, Into The Woods, Edge of Tomorrow - she has her own voice. Like Daniel Radcliffe and Keira Knightley, audiences just prefer her as a Brit.
This was not the worst part of the film. They both played English-born sisters now living in the US with Alison Brie pulling an accent which was fine, just like Jacki Weaver and a couple of others did. I think that was one of the better running jokes in the film. There were a few people playing Brits who weren't really Brits.
As to why Emily Blunt plays a Brit, well why not?Yes, it's not like Brits never move to America.🐭 share
