A church as 'British' as a Hershey bar, & as for black taxi cabs...! ,-)
Just had to comment upon the laughable, supposedly 'British' church!! ,-)
This church featured in a scene towards the end of the film. It was a beautiful church, of the white boarded/clapboard design, with a pretty set of steps leading up to its porch, & located right on the grass. I have seen loads of such churches in US films, and would love to see one in reality. I have heard there are loads in New England. But in old England?! i.e. in Britain?! I have never seen anything like that design of - or setting for - a church anywhere in the UK, after a lifetime living (and being born & bred - wink-wink!) in England.
I mean - I thought the English accents of the non-Brits in this film were very good, and could not hear even a vestige of an Aussie/other accent. Which was great as a lot of Aussies seem to get cast as Brits in American films, and sadly the viewer (or, me & my family, at least!) can frequently hear slight 'twists' of an Aussie twang. Those accent breaks give away the origin of the actor, and thus create a fissure in the viewer's suspension of disbelief i.e. detract from the believability of the character. So, as the accent aspect of 'Britishness' was very realistic in this film, we were delighted. Merit points to the casting people &/or voice coach!
But why is it that the producers etc. of US films & TV always think that if you simply bring a black London taxi cab into a scene, then the location immediately looks English! They tried it in this scene in 'The Five-Year Engagement' and, nope, it doesn't do the job, as the church we then saw proved the 'Britishness' of the location to be a lie: the church design style was of completely the wrong country, let alone continent!
Oh, and by the way, producers, please note that black cabs are largely 'indigenous' to the city of London, not further afield into the UK, and definitely NOT as far as the great British countryside! So please don't dump a black taxi in an English village scene. If I had ever got a London black cab to take me out to the sticks, my life in the UK would have been a lot easier!! LOL!! ,-D
