even rent an apartment to begin with. He didn't exactly indicate that he enjoyed being at home in the least bit. I figure since he was only at home around 40 or so days a year and not all at the same time, it seems to me that a person like him would be more comfortable staying in a hotel, with maid service, in house bars and restaurants, a concierge service, or maybe a hotel with the extended stay option. It would be a lot easier like that, no lease agreement, utilities, insurance, buying furniture, etc. His home was the road anyway. Just an observation after seeing the movie for the 4th time. Any ideas?

It was said that he didn't like being home but I can't remember the exact words. I think the only reason he has a place would be for mail purposes.

Maybe so, but if he didn't have an apartment he would have that many bills. If he stayed in hotels in various places, he could have paperless billing and pay everything online and never have to go home. No big deal really, just something I wondered about since he stated that he didn't like to go home.

I watched this my second time just now and had thought the same thing on first view, but I did notice tonight that the building he lives in has a very hotel looking front door and name.

In voiceover he said 43 days a year he didn’t travel and was forced to stay home in misery.

His apartment was bare, basic — actually more like a budget hotel.
Plain white fridge, formica counter, basic baths.
View of a building.
Even keeps Hilton slippers in the closet.

That bland, sterile, underwhelming apt served a purpose to show Ryan's private live was an empty vessel.

I haven't seen the movie in years but I just read the script recently, and there was a line where someone asked him that same question and his response was --

"I wish I could stay in a hotel, but without a permanent residence the IRS will consider you a Vagrant"

I would have expected him to have a McMansion, half-empty, the few items being from Sky Mall.

They explain it in a deleted scene that he needed residency for tax purposes....1. Primarily so the IRS could have an address on file 2. State Tax purposes. He lives and his work is based in Nebraska. So he is liable for State income tax. If he had no address then it would cause a confusion.
