Decent - Third Best in the Franchise

Just watched this and I thought it was quite good.

I would give this 7 out of 10

Predator 1 = 9.5
Predator 2 = 8.5

Was it as good as predator 1 or 2 - NO it wasn't but I would rate this above Predators, The Predator and both the AVP movies which just didn't seem to know what they wanted and just tried to put alot of gimmicks into copying the best bits of the first 2 and made the predators seem weak and easily killed.

This had decent cinematography, good enough script, brutal and the new predator was good and not a pushover and endured alot, definitely re-watchable.

This had a coherent story, the kills were good and the atmosphere was mostly good.

Could it have been better yes definitely like
It should have been filmed in native language like apocolypto and then dubbed into English - which made look like it was set in modern times rather 1700's.
The music was 50/50 good in some bits but weak in other bits.
Could have been abit more bleak like apocolypto and having adult Comanche instead of young ones.
Cut out the predator build up from killing small animals straight to hunting worthy opponents.
Abit more traps by the frenchmen could have been added to hurt the predator and still show his strength to carry on and made the finale alot more believable.
Better consistency of the weather - like going from mist all over to clean blue skies was too much of a contrast.
Too much daylight filming instead of evening time made it look too nice and cheerful instead of dreary like it should have been.
Re-use of the original lines was just awkward and should have never been added to this.
The Naru character wanting to be a hunter could have been tweaked to her being dragged into being a hunter would have been better after seeing her fellow Comanche's dying.

editted:

Just finished watching the Comanche version and it does make it alittle better - would say it would go to 7.25 if it was in filmed in full comanche audio, but as a dub i would push it from 7 to 7.10/10 - so worth a watch in comanche first if you can.

I've heard this take a few times now, and I'm finally bored enough to correct it: this is, of course, a ridiculous take. Consider:

Ben Hur
Spartacus
Gladiator
Sound of Music
Schindler's List

etc, etc, etc. . .

Now stop. NO, STOP!!! Think! Pause!!!

Does your contention still make sense to you?

(Hint: No)

Does your contention still make sense to you? Yes it does.

the films you listed were white people speaking english and it looked totally fine and this is natives speaking english, which not only sounded wrong but looked weird.

same as some bollywood or korean actors speaking English next to English actors which makes then looks funny and weird, think of Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas speaking, she looks funny even though she is more use to speaking english from a young age but it still looks weird.

So…. What’s your take on completely alien species in MCU or Star Trek films speaking perfect English? :)

reply

LMAO

While I applaud you for working hard at it, you can't cure Stupid

reply

I do feel sorry for your mom, she raised you and how disappointed she must be - to have taught you if you don't have anything nice to say then keep quiet but there you go anyway.

reply

And there you have it. . .Exhibit A

reply

I'll give you a standing ovation for exhibit b, my my you are very clever.

reply

No ovation necessary; just throw money. . .

reply

don't worry i'll put a few dollars in your g-string.

reply

The language of the species actually does match the people.

most of the characters were western actors in suits/voice artists speak either in english or made up languages?

Lets take star trek next gen - would it have looked o.k if the klingon spoke in hindi rather then a made up language? or whoopi goldberg spoke in fleunt Chinese? or Patrick Stewart spoke in fluent russian?

I'd rate this second best. It just feels more intense and serious than either Predator 2 or Predators.

reply

to me, this was just a basic good movie, but the content wasn't that serious at all and there was no real moral to the predator who was basically picking off anything it saw, same as predators, least the predator 1 and 2 the predator had a code and ethic and it was hunting to find the best opponent, while getting rid of any armed threats - so a sense of purpose.

in terms of the intensity this was just a basic pop-corn movie, no intensity at all, the predator killed who it liked and the comanche tried to defend themselves and at the end it was go back to home while there was no grieving or anything.

Wish I had known about the Comanche version.... may have made it slightly more tolerable.

I think the thing that makes me so angry about Prey is the wasted potential. It's filmed decently enough and wants to be taken serious in its depiction (unlike The Predator), but then it throws all its good will out the window near the end. There are a few things I will mention that no one will have an answer to other than to just turn one's brain off to make it acceptable:

1) Naru got stuck in the bear trap and came out of it with just a bruise, and ZERO damage or problems with her leg.

2) Naru fought and defeated three full grown men at once with her bare hands a knife. Neither Danny Glover, Adrian Brody, nor Arnold Schwarzenegger fought three grown men at once and beat them in hand-to-hand combat. Think about that.

3) In Predator 1 and 2 both Predators did massive damage to the main characters in their respective hand-to-hand showdown, leaving them at the brink of death, in shock, and horribly bruised, battered, and in some ways broken. Other than getting chokeslammed (which seemingly did zero damage to her), somehow Naru managed to come out of a hand-to-hand fight with the Predator unscathed.
