Why do director of photography choose to use that "Vaseline on the camera lens" style?
Scream 4 has a similar style... it's so horrible, the image looks so bad
The technical term for this is diffusion filter. House of the Dragon also cranked it up to 11 and ruined the picture quality.
Notice the ridiculously blurry light source in this frame from First Kill.

It gives the picture a dream like quality, so maybe the DP is telling us "It's all a dream". It also helps to hide imperfections in cheap sets and visual effects.
