Question about Miss G's Sexual Orientation

I can't tell if she's really a lesbian, or the depth of her institutionalization has veered her sexuality in this direction.

Well, to give you an exact response, IMO it was her obsession and therefore, her state of mind that veered her sexuality in that direction.

I wouldn't say she's in fact a lesbian per se, as others also said and I wouldn't say either that the main purpose of the film is to tell us about a lesbian relationship actually, IMO it's beyond that matter... it is more complex, pure psychological.

To sum it all up a bit, I think that what Miss G did, her acts, actions how she behaved was just a consequence of how she was and then in what she was becoming, and therefore, became, you know, as a person, a consequence of her undeniable & evil obsession.
She's for sure a very complicated & complex person/character and really interesting to analyze if you ask me.

I agree. Ms G is not a lesbian. She is a mentally troubled individual, made so by her life at the boarding school. She is an adult who has missed all the so called rights of passage that a girl/young woman goes through. Most important among these is exposure to boys/young men. As she has become older, her pathology has grown, and one has to wonder if she is not a very bad influence on the girls.

Ms G is a person who has "slipped through the cracks".

I don't see Ms G as strictly defined by her sexuality. She is a troubled person to begin with. Ms G's personality, as formed by her extremely sheltered life (contrary to her stories of world travel and adventure)is important to consider. She's never been around men in her life, and a trip into town to run an errand is a traumatic event for her. This leads me to question if she is really a lesbian. She may be Bi-polar and may have suffered from being an orphan, marooned at this desolate boarding school. We see other faults in her, dilusions of grandure, and preying upon the vunerable nature of these lonely girls. So, I guess I see Ms G's problems and actions as manifestations of a mentally unstable person, rather than a lesbian.

reply

I see no reason to think that Miss G wasn't a lesbian. She's clearly not heterosexual. The fact that she's a troubled woman does not negate her sexual orientation. There are sane lesbians and insane ones, just like any other group of people.

I'm not saying she was an experienced lesbian. She just seemed attracted exclusively to girls.

"Joey, have you ever been in a Turkish prison?"

Sexual Orientation is not The film's central theme, a plot device, maybe?

I think there is not enough evidence to suggest she is gay. There are hardly any men in The film and when there are she was nervous around them. I saw her nervousness as being outside of her comfort zone with the school and possibly men.

I have to agree that I do not think she is straight. She gave too much evidence to suggest she liked her own sex.

However, i do sense that mrs. G is attracted to the person rather than sex.

IMO gender had nothing to do with it, Miss G was a pedophile (technically ephebophile but lets not argue semantics) and her desire had more to do with dominance and control. If it had been an all boys school she would have acted the same way.

She was fascinated by her at first, then she became obsessed with her and finally this obsession turned into lust.
She was, in fact, an edgy and emotionally unstable personality, so we can't tell for sure.. lol

People ALWAYS have to put a label on things. She could have been a lesbian. She could have bi-curious. She could have been a metro-sexual female. Or most likely (as the OP surmised)she was just very sexually repressed and her sexuality happened to come spilling out in a certain direction.

People also REALLY overuse the word "pedophile". That means an attraction to prepubescent CHILDREN, it's not "just semantics". Every adult male and I imagine a lot of lesbians would be attracted to a girl who looked as mature and beautiful as Maria Valverde (the real actress was 19) does in this. It's just that most of them wouldn't RAPE her, let alone what "Ms. G" does later.

Most people are not either absolutely straight or absolutely gay, nor do they immediately go from "ewww she's only 17--that's sick" to "man, she turned 18 today--I want to *bleep* her". Sexuality is just a lot more fluid and messy than that.
