Superb ending twist but it'd been BETTER if...(spoilers)

Despite having watched lots of fabulous twist-ending movies such as The Game, The Others, Identity, The Usual Suspects, Mullholland Drive, etc. I have to admit that I didn't see the twist of this movie coming until its eventual revelation. It was thus superb.

I thought it was going to have a rather predictable ending - that Michael Douglas was indeed the bad guy and CJ was the good guy. So I almost wanted to stop watching it when more evidence that was against the DA had surfaced.

However, though the ending is great, IMHO a better alternate ending would be as follows: The DA has been righteous all the while. It was CJ who had planted fake evidence (without the DA knowing) that had led the DA to "complete all jigsaw puzzles" to effectively prosecute the suspects. His point is thus to prove that we can't pronounce a person guilty basing only on circumstantial evidence, since these can always be planted by any 3rd party (for whatever reasons).

Anyone agrees that this would be a far less predictable ending?

Honestly, I think that would be stretching it all even thinner.

Also, I'm still caught up on that amazing last line, that makes me forgive the movie for some of its many lamenesses.

I was chanting "Go *beep* yourself, go *beep* yourself" in my head during the lead up to that ending, and then it actually HAPPENED. She said it, and it was amazing. *grin*

Back to your point, though, I think it worked how it was. It would just be too weird, considering Hunter is obviously dirty. Twist endings have to make sense. I'd just feel cheated if they backed out on the core plot and made it so there was only one bad guy.

CJ seeing an opportunity and taking advantage of another scumbag works nicely, I thought. One bad guy screwing over another makes for interesting plot. I was thinking that perhaps they could have gone all the way with the twist, though, and had him actually get away with it. Not all movies need happy endings, and that all wrapped up too nicely. Then again, that may lead to some people feeling "cheated" like I mentioned above. Just a thought. I think either could work.

Ya, I guess I must be biased, since I am a great fan of Michael Douglas. Have always wished that he be the good guy!

I have to say I saw the twist ending from about the second difficult phone call the CJ character had in the first act, and I'm usually really dumb when it comes to that sort of stuff. But then again Jesse Metcalfe really pissed me off from the word go (even the name). The bumbling side-kick played by Joel Moore was just a head above Jesse and luckily for him got out of the script before the final act.

Oh yes the final act; well, they could have gone splatter on us and had Jesse beat the gorgeous Amber Tamblyn to death with his award.

They could have gone Hitchcockian on us and had Amber soaked to the skin hanging from some national monument from which Jesse plunges or is almost saved by Orlando Jones who then goes on to get physical with Amber (a personal favorite of mine notwithstanding the Hollywood taboo on black men with white leads).

Another top vote was for Michael Douglas to run from the courtroom porsued by Orlando to a similar end to the above (Michael Douglas IMHO should have done the decent thing and stopped acting sometime before making 'It runs in the family' so I would never have seen any of it).

But no Peter Hyams went all 80's on us and showed us how bad movies were back then, especially when Michael Douglas was starring in them!

You have got to be kidding. I agree with the post above mine. It could not have been more obvious who the woman in the video was from the time of the second phone call that was never mentioned in the movie, until the very end, other than to show us the phone calls. Who the heck else could it have been? What a mess this movie was! I love Michael Douglas, but how could he get himself into this? You don't make 100 copies of that disk if you're Metcalfe, who might be the worst actor I've ever seen by the way. Tamblyn was quite solid though, but stuck in a stupid movie. There wasn't a moment that wasn't predictable from a mile away, except for Orlando Jones showing up to help her toward the end. Of course, that wasn't predictable because it was so stupidly explained that it couldn't be predictable. He was following the guy who was following her is weak to begin with, but then he also decided to let the guy circle her for about 3 minutes before shooting him. What a horrible movie!

Yeah, that was a hardcore deus ex machina moment . . . still, I enjoyed the film.

hardcore deus ex machina moment ....

she called him..thats part of the reason she was so calm.

Actually I would of been surprised if Orlando Jones didn't show up. I was looking for his character after he was unceremoniously dropped from the case. He was obviously pissed off. I said to myself he is not going to let this rest. So him showing up worked for me. There was a lot more implausible parts in this movie then that. I just think if he was obvious the crooked detective would of noticed him following him and he would of ended up dead. So we never noticed him either.

I didn't see the twist ending coming, but I'm usually bad at guessing them, too. My wife and I were wondering about the phone calls, but we quickly forgot about them.

We were spending more time trying to figure out how the heck the plot to entrap Michael Douglas' character was supposed to work, lol. I kept thinking, "Wait, if they plant evidence at the scene, that wouldn't demonstrate that 'Michael Douglas' (I'm terrible remembering character names--I usually just call them by the actors' names, even while I'm watching the film) is doing anything wrong--he'd just be trying the case on the evidence available to him" . . . and then even when we figured out that they weren't going to plant evidence right at the scene, I was still confused about it--then I was thinking, "Huh? If they plant evidence later on, then at best it might show that the police are doing sloppy work--wtf?"

It took me forever to realize that the plan was to not plant evidence at the crime scene but otherwise put it into detectives' hands, and not enough to ensure a conviction, thus enticing Michael Douglas' character into planting additional, incontrovertible evidence.

A lot of things in the film were a bit of a ridiculous gamble, and characters make far more stupid decisions than normal . . . but despite all of this, I still enjoyed the film.
