Rent the Original 1956 version.

This remake was terrible. The original had better acting, better handled plot, maybe a little simpler, but it was 1956 after all. Somehow I am surprised that Michael Douglas even appeared in this one. I think it would have been slightly better (?) if Michael Douglas had played CJ. I was waiting for it to be in my local theater and suddenly found it on DVD. Now I know why. Should have saved my money. Actors like Dana Andrews, Joan Fontaine, Sydney Blackmer had better acting ability than the remake actors.

joang, where would you recommend we look to rent the original?

I've never seen for rent before and TCM certainly doesn't air it much, if ever.
To my knowledge, it's never been put onto DVD, so that eliminates Netflix, etc.

Where did you see the original?

reply

Try this link and you'll see that TCM does have this film and if you contact them perhaps they'll schedule it.

Thanks Warrior. Yes, I know. TCM last had it scheduled at this time last year (literally) and then dropped it from the schedule with a few days notice. I really doubt they would air it just because I asked.

When I first read Joan's recommendation to "rent the original", buying a VHS tape from the UK isn't exactly what I had in mind. Maybe she has an actual idea.

No DVD, obscure on VHS, rarely, if ever, shown on TCM?
Makes me wonder how many people have actually seen this awesome "classic" from 1956.

Saw it on TV, a few years ago for sure but still saw it anyway. And yes it was good.

Is there way where we could see the 1956 version online?

reply

you can rent it from Lovefilm (the rental side of Amazon). Good movie!

The original was on TCM yesterday and frankly both movies have the same plot weaknesses. But if you have to choose pick the original.
