That woman could have saved her arm!
But she didn't want to spend 2 years of her time saving it, so chop it off then. WTF!

shareCould have been a money issue.
shareMy grandfather got into a railroad accident when he was in his 30s that messed up his leg. He didn't want to do any physical rehabilitation to get better and so, over time, his leg deteriorated, the pain with it. Then he told the doctors that he just wants the pain to go away, so they amputated it.
Moral of the story: people come in all sorts of shades, and what one person values another one doesn't really care about.
Did he regret it?
shareWell, I don't know if he regretted losing his leg, but I'm sure he regretted something, or perhaps it was just self-pity. He didn't have the greatest life, and sadly his ultimate life trajectory is quite sad, but he never complained about the loss of his leg or his inability to eventually not be able to walk or move.
I work/ed in healthcare, and I have seen people who come into a facility and say to me, when I tell them they're not doing everything they can to improve their well-being, that "they're tired of taking care of themselves, and they're ready for others to care for them."
We can't begin the comprehend what goes on in some people's heads. We truly are unique and mindsets/perspectives can be polarizing.
I think in your examples including your grandfather their might have been some other things going on like maybe depression.
She also admitted to being pretty motivated to get back to work and take a bit of the dramatic edge off of it..to help Joe save face.
It wouldn't be surprising to imagine Joe having made it clear to her just how important it was she get back ASAP, but either way it seemed like her loyalty to him was unwavering...maybe it was a sacrifice she was willing to make.
Going through physical therapy, I doubt that she'd have been allowed to continue the kind of work she'd been doing in the meantime...not while that arm was healing, you know? She could very well have taken the hit for the sake of Joe, the patriarch of that dysfunctional family that many people seemed to claim as their only family, gotten a little social currency out of the deal, a bit more of a station, of a standing in Joe's eyes.
Yeah, she's an idiot.
That reminded me of Ronnie Lott, a corner-back for the SF 49ers. He injured a finger in a game, and the medical staff gave him two options. He could come out of the game, and later have surgery to repair the finger. Or they could chop off the tip
of the finger, and go back into the game. Crazy mother told them to chop it off.
😎
she didn't have health insurance. usa is the only "developed" country without free healthcare.
