Mew hadn't tried to make a weapon and take Howard's gun?

So in the movie MEW and Howard obviously get off to a rough start. However, after she sees the woman dyeing from some kind of contamination outside and Howard confesses that he caused her accident the 3 fall into a peaceful relationship for several weeks or months.

It isn't until MEW has to fix the air filter and finds help scratched into the glass that things change. And they change because Howard finds out that MEW has stolen items and secretly makes a weapon and a makeshift radiation suit.

So my question is how long would things have stayed peaceful if MEW hadn't had to fix the airlifter?

Howard only shows aggression once before this during dinner when MEW is flirting with Emmitt as some kind obvious game of devious manipulation on both Howard and Emmitt.

He may have been happy being billy big bollocks king of the underground lair. He evidently liked having power over the pair of them and in their absence he may have been bored and lonely. I reckon he would have kept the status quo as long as he could. Though it does seem he would have wanted to become a romantic item with MEW's character with the other guy being a third wheel and expendable.

Agreed.

I just think it's strange that if Howard's primary goal was to become romantic with mew or at least turn her into a daughter figure for him that he didn't have a plan in place to get rid of Emmitt. During the peaceful time he really doesn't seem to mind Emmitt, treating him as a minor annoyance.

I guess the argument could be made that he was just waiting for a justifiable reason to kill Emmitt and it just happened to come when Emmitt falsely admits that he was making a weapon to take Howard's gun. But shoot that kind of confession would put anybody on self-preservation alert.

Howard is portrayed as possibly being on the autism spectrum and seems to have trouble communicating with Emmitt and MEW. I think this possibly makes him appear creeper and more abusive than he intends.
