The Ending is Terrible

First of all, what a film. Absolutely loved it up until the "twist" ending. The buildup was brilliant! My girlfriend who hates generic Hollywood films (she did Film at University) was genuinely on the edge of her seat during any of the scenes where tension is building and was very much on the side of "what the *beep* is going on?" Which made the film interesting and compelling. Along with John Goodmans acting the film was turning out to be a 9/10...then the ending came...what the *beep* was that ending all about.

It's literally like the writers sat down and went "What's going to happen when she goes outside? We can't have the Cloverfield monster appear as it'd be too obvious to Cloverfield fans and an attack by a foreign nation is too boring...what shall we do???....Aliens!"

Which was a terrible decision, they either should have stuck to the whole Cloverfield monster thing OR have her escape with Howard still alive and the underground bunker still intact. She escapes in her suit and see's the world turned to chaos due to the devastation left after the Nuclear Attack against Clovie, realises (through visual imagery) that her only current choice is to essentially become Howards weird "adoptive" child (he behaved more like a man who wanted a daughter rather than a sex slave) or sex slave. Then have Howard come back and begin to drag her in as the camera pans out showing just how much devastation the attack on Clovie caused, then another "roar" from Clovie to again give us the "is Clovie alive or dead" mystery. I very much wanted the end (especially after I saw the actual ending) to be a "This is what the world is now, accept it or die".

Instead we have *beep* aliens who have the ability to fly yet can't chase a slower, weaker female human down, have trouble against plastic bottles, display their weakest spot for the human to take advantage of & get tricked by a *beep* car alarm. Just more *beep* dumb aliens vs lucky human, seen it dozens of times...IT'S BORING. As soon as the aliens appear, you know she isn't going to die, you know there is going to be some freedom fighter movement against the aliens, you know all of this as soon as the movie confirms the threat.

Plus the after-scene was so *beep* She's driving along and has to make a decision between

Route A = Literally nothing
Route B = People that will help you but you might to help them &/or fight Aliens

Woah what a *beep* of a decision that one must have been...god I can tell why she has such difficulty making that decision.

It had a very "I Am Legend" quality ending to me and that was *beep* as well. It had the standard "nothing bad can happen to the protraganist so she won't die and there's a solution provided to all her problems" *beep*

Final result: 5/10 (You can skip the ending and pretend they all remain friends in the bunker, that'd be a better ending)

Agreed OP. I thought the film was a great psychological thriller until... Aliens! WTF!

You are not even remotely as smart as you think you are.

First, "twist" ending? Seriously? If you did not know from early on that it was aliens then you are not very perceptive.

Second, Route A & Route B a choice between nothing and something? You were not listening. Route A was a survivor camp north of Baton Rouge. Route B was Houston where people needed help. This was directly related to her story about failing to help the abused girl in the grocery store. That was the choice.
Route A, help yourself. Route B, help others.
Route A, the easy path. Route B, the difficult path.

I find it amusing when people, like you, come on here to post complaints that illustrate just how incapable they are of following a story and blaming the inability to understand on the people who created the story.

Good stuff.

bu-bu-but his girlfriend is a film student (that we'll never hear of).

Excellent point. I don't think they were paying very close attention.

I agree, the ending sucked.

I agree there were too many plot conveniences during the ending, but the "Route A or Route B" ending isn't quite what you've stated. She had a choice to RUN or Not to RUN. Route A meant getting to Safety, where the Aliens had already been taken care of; Route B was a call for help for anyone with medical or combat experience to help them stave off remaining threats there. Given her personal narrative of wanting to help, but always choosing to RUN, this was her chance Not to Run, when it matters most. So you've completely missed the fact that she DIDN'T take the easy way out!

The ending is what "Cloverfield" was about; a giant friggin monster. 99% of this "sequel" had zip to do with the original film. Not even in the same state. Could have been called "10 Anywhere Lane". It was a bait and switch rip off to use the name Cloverfield.

So if you hated the ending then you must have hated the first film. Why are you here except to stir up nonsense?

Having it just be the Cloverfield monster would have been far more predictable and boring than the alien attack angle. I loved the last part of the movie, it elevated it to an even higher level for me. As for her choice at the end, it was between a safe haven for survivors and going into the fray to try and help others but also face combat and danger. It would be a hard choice and she made the choice not wanting to "regret the decision to not help"

The ending was great, I really don't get what's so boring about getting finally rid of a human psycho and running into an alien invasion giving merit to some of that psycho's crazy theories. It's literally refreshing. Is there a movie like this, where a kidnapped woman escapes a psychopath and finds out there's an alien invasion outside? I doubt it, but you're free to prove me wrong.

And why would we want her to get dragged back inside with Howard, exactly? If she was you, wouldn't you put up a fight, after all you've been through? Hell, there's WAR going on outside, the air is breathable (contrary to Howie's lies), and you have 2 cars available to you. What do you do: a) go back inside and get raped/abused/cut to pieces/eaten by acid, or b) steal a car and try your luck?

The ending you suggest would literally make no goddamn sense after she escaped outside. If we even wanna go with her going back inside, I could accept it as being a cool ending only if she KILLED HOWARD. Like, grab an axe, kick that door down, chop his head off with one fell swoop, kick the head out, shut the doors behind you. There. Much, much cooler. Killer ending.

I completely agree! I loved how there was a plottwist towards the end and Howard apparently wasn't such a bad guy after all (if you forget he shot a man - which was arguably for his and Michelle's safety). But aliens... "Come on.." as Michelle said. It was almost as if the writers were justifying their lack of inspiration through her words.

It actually reminded me of the ending of "Knowing", a horrible Nicolas Cage film.
