Nice Red Herring At The Beginning

After we established, very early, that Cara's husband had been murdered and the David alternate had been murdered, I settled back and waited for the dead husband to be one of the split personalities. I was pretty sure he'd be popping out to say hello to his widow at any moment. So, good job going somewhere completely different!

I figure that must have been intentional misdirection because otherwise the husband could have died in a car wreck or any other way without going into all the detail of Christmas Eve/walking home from church/throat slit, etc.

Makes me think the original script might have been pretty tight and the reveal, with the hill people and the dirt and so forth, only got a little confusing and sloppy later on due to production constraints.

I agreed with your comment 100%.
It's refreshing to see a plot point in a movie that doesn't treat us like we're learning impaired.

The point of the story of Dr. Cara with her husband being murdered in Christmas Eve after coming out of their Church service is that she hasn't lost faith in God even going through this horrible experience, she still prays with her daughter which we learned has lost faith in God, she even tells Adam/David that even thought she is a woman of science she also is a woman of God (or something like that I don't remember exactly how she said it) when he asked her about the Christian cross pendant, therefore we can assume that she is protected from the Reverend when she talks to Adam/David.
It wasn't a red herring, is just to explain how basically in the plot she can stay alive throughout the movie.
Makes me think about Job, she lost her husband, then the Father, brother and daughter in one night and then plus her daughter's body is David's soul's shelter and frikkin paralyzed! Only people with true faith in God can endure all that.
