Kirsten Dunst surprised me in this film! ***Spoilers***

Its been a long while, the last time I was wowed by her was her role as Claudia in “Interview of a Vampire” some 17 years back, after that she sort of became part of the Hollywood machine and finally disappeared into obscurity after her horrendous turn as Mary Jane in Spiderman.

But she was pretty great in this film, maybe it was because my expectations were very low, but man she did really well in this film, especially in that the scene where she call’s Gosling’s character and begged him to let her go. Also her scenes pre and post abortion were standouts as well. I think the time away from filmmaking has done her some good and rejuvenated her interest.

She was very mature in this film and displayed a side we don’t get see very often, her frustration, desperation and heartbreak were expertly crafted in her performance, you can’t help but feel for her.

Yes, she's definitely the strongest aspect of this altogether mediocre film.

Guys like us aren't cool, man!

reply

I agree. If the film was better, I'm sure that she'd get an Oscar nom.

the only surprising element for me was the part when i saw her boobs :)

She was great, but the Oscar voters may end up spliting their votes into the leading & supporting actress categories. Though her character disappeared abruptly, it was towards the end of the film already and she appeared in most of the scenes during the first three-quarter of the show. So it is also reasonable to nominate her as lead actress.

She was very good.

She did give an excellent performance. Like the op mentioned, the scenes pre and post abortion were Oscar worthy.

Dunst's performance alone is what made this movie involving and very moving. I was initially skeptical because of the film's use of courtroom testimony as a narrative device, which can be a too-easy way of spoon feeding the audience information as well as Gosling's very distanced performance (appropriate considering he's playing a very distanced character), but Dunst gave the audience someone to care about and when she disappeared, it felt genuinely tragic. I'm usually not impressed with Kirsten Dunst because I usually find her trying too hard to have the audience like her, but I believe more recently she's shed that affliction of self-consciousness and she was nothing less than natural under Jarecki's direction.

Unless you love, your life will flash by.

I typically find her cute, but not that good of an actress. However, she was great in this movie. There were a number of scenes that blew me away. Too bad it went straight to DVD--I'm sure it was very disappointing for her after giving her all to her performance.

I hear the drizzle of the rain. Like a memory it falls.

I thought Kirsten was absolutely great in this movie and she's actually the main reason I have watched this twice.

Dunst was terrific here. Best I've ever seen her!
