quite trusting and daft

her parents were. granted he spun phrases quite well, they never questioned Davids motives not once. granted you cant jump to conclusions. they didnt even seem bothered by the engagement. like okay maybe they had their suspicions but never were they confirmed, but after finding out they did have a relationship enough to get engaged id be furious

That was the thing that puzzled me. It seemed quite unbelievable to me. However, one reads about parents of young boys who were clueless about an adult male taking an interest in their sons, so I guess it happens.

I took it as being part of the times and English culture. Nowadays certainly you'd more than likely be called a bad or negligent parent if you let your daughter romp around with an older man, but back in the 60s, and especially growing up in a European household?

I too, was quite surprised by their trust even though David told great stories to them. Your daughter being only 16/17, allowing her to nonchalantly frolic with an older man...weekend trips away, etc. It did seem a bit farfetched. I actually would've thought they would've been more strict in the 60s than now. But, I think Jennys parents had sort of a desperation to live vicariously through her.

The possibility of having your daughter marry into a wealthier family is what drove the parents' reaction. I don't know much about British culture, but the class-climbing mentality seemed to really hold sway back then. It might even be that way right now with a lot of families.

I liked the film but all I wanted to do while watching is : "WHY ARE YOU LETTING YOUR TEENAGE DAUGHTER DATE A OLDER MAN?".

For Christ sake; the teacher and headmistress were more concerned about Jenny en her reputation than her parebts.
