I like the snippet from Variety's review, which takes a preemptive strike against other anticipated reviews:
"Dec 24, 2021
"American Underdog" is a thoroughly predictable yet hugely entertaining sports biopic that is bound to please almost anyone who's not a sourball cynic or a snarky critic."
I have not seen it, but I'm quite familiar with the Kurt Warner story. I even remember that he replaced injured quarterback Trent Green at St. Louis. I recall that his coach, Dick Vermeil, was a cryer. Since I know so much about his story, I wonder if there is enough added, to make it worth seeing this film.
My family and went to see it on Christmas. We all enjoyed it immensely. They were familiar with Kurt Warner's story but, not being a football fan, I had no idea who he was.
The film is really about two things: 1. His determined rise in the world of football. And 2. His courtship of, and marriage to, Brenda Meoni. Kurt and Brenda's relationship is a huge part of the movie.
The film is made by two Christian brothers and Kurt's faith is given attention in the film, and since critics are usually dismissive of anything even remotely faith-based I'm surprised the critics' score is as high as it is.
Overall I'd give the movie a 7.5. If I weren't allowed to use half-points I'd bump it up to an 8 rather than going down.
