I hated the Flying Rods episode. That "mystery" was solved years ago.

Well, the definition of "monster" is rather fluid. Literally, it means something that is so remarkable, that you could show it off to the public (from the Latin "monstrare" , "to show" or "to point out", related to the word "demonstrate"). For all practically purposes, it means something big and scary--seven-foot primates, birds big enough to carry off a child, Hogzilla, giant rats in the sewers, etc. Although there were some reports of "monsters" in this sense in the early days of UFO reports, most of the creatures associated with them were, first, blond Aryan-type space brothers (Adamski and the like); and later, the "gray alien" (deriving originally from the Hill case, later conflated into the Roswell collection of stories). As I understand it, monsters in the usual sense of the word hardly exist at all in UFO lore, which is probably why MonsterQuest leaves such things to programs such as UFO Files.
