Depressing ass film

This movie was so depressing. Every man in this movie was depicted as a scoundrel. The only thing missing was the big 6'6 man dressed in drag saying "Good Murnin"

I don't think the writer/director was focused on depicting "every man in this movie ... as a scoundrel." From what I've read, I understand that this movie is "based on a true story"; her story.

I might add that several of the female characters behaved badly in this story (killing someone or stalking someone might get one labeled a scoundrel!!!). Conversely, the character "Junior" was depicted as a mostly caring father and husband. That said, I don't mean to imply that gender-based "scoundrel-parity" is required in a work of art, particularly one based on a true story. I make this point merely to illustrate that your comment misses the mark completely.

I agree with Lebohane. There weren't too many people in this film (Male or Female)that weren't portrayed as "damaged goods" in this film. I think it's the story's strong point. It's a semi-autobiographical story about breaking out of a very vicious cycle of poverty and hopelessness. Great film!

Was Kari supposed to be adopted? The daughter of the dad's former mistress? Did I miss the part where they explained this random biracial child in the family?

Biracial actors (primarily women) play black roles.

The actress playing Kari (Tessa Thompson) is black with some Mexican ancestry. I wish people would get off this "light skin" thing,seriously, and stop claiming that a light-skinned biracial person isn't a "real" black person. I mean, well over half a century ago, white people didn't give a damn how light-skinned you were, if you were black, you were black--period. Genetics don't work according to people's racial definitions---they just do what they do.

Yes that happens a lot. Lee Daniels, director of Precious, cast all the positive characters from the novel with light skinned biracial actors (who were described as dark skinned in the book).

Not true that every black man was depicted as a scoundrel. Omar, Kari's male friend, was kind.

Yeah, it was a depressing film, but so what? It's was still closer to real life for some people than most Hollywood movies are, and it stayed true to its subject matter by keeping it really real. A well-made film,too. Being black myself, I could relate to some of the folks in the film---heck,my family even had that same large woven fan on the wall in the scene where Sammy tries to move up on his wife---I was like, "Whoa---we actually had one of those, lol!"
