Does anyone wear their dress again?

I don't like the costume-y dresses covered in tiers of ruffles, and loaded with bling, or the princess/ballgown styles...and I just can't imagine someone spending thousands and thousands of dollars on a dress that's essentially going to become a throwaway. Why not choose something classic that can later serve as a gala evening dress, or be shortened to be somewhat less formal?

One of the dresses I like that a few have chosen is the (seemingly) simple lace sheath with a halter top appearance, and a keyhole back. You could actually wear that again.

My mom and sister both wore their wedding dresses again...and they're not poor.

I should emphasize, they didn't keep dragging out their wedding dresses for decades. They've been officially retired, but were worn again to some formal events within 6 years or so of being purchased....

I honestly don't know many people who go to gala occasions so even an evening gown would be a 1 time thing. I think people are getting more casual, I don't think I've worn an evening gown in a decade or so. I do occasionally wear a cocktail dress but I really think that a wedding gown that's been shortened to a cocktail gown would still look pretty bridal. The truth is, for many women, a wedding gown is the only fancy gown they will ever wear outside of a prom dress and so I don't think they are looking for a fancy gown to wear again.

Well, that's true. I can understand how one would want to just concentrate on their wedding, and not look further down the road. It is sad to me though, that someone would completely fall in love with a dress, then only get to wear it once. But, I guess it has served it's purpose : (

A lot of women now preserve their dresses and put them on display (not sure how I feel about that....) but like another poster said, most people do not go to galas or fancy parties, so their wedding is their one day to dress extremely fancy. So I can understand why some people go all out. However, for my wedding we are eloping so my dress is really simple and I could definitely re-wear it for an anniversary dinner or something.

i just don't see the point of spending so much on a dress you won't wear again. i know what option i would pick if i were getting married and its not that

Tacky to re-use it. Drunken or clumsy brides spill red wine on that expensive white satin -- ruined. Many people buy those tired-looking wedding dresses at the thrift store in order to get the lace cheaply.

if they pay for a tailor to alter it to something else, would you still consider it tacky to reuse?
