This wasn't a remake. It was kung-fu, not karate. The names were also changed. This was more like a sequel of sorts. Like The Next Karate Kid. That one fit in with the series, but it wasn't a remake. Maybe they kept the same title for marketing, but I'm sure The Kung-Fu kid could have worked.

What about other franchises? The Sandlot, for example, had a sequel that followed the exact same plot with a few things added in. Home Alone did the same thing with movies 3 through 5.

I know about the 80's Karate Kid. I've seen it a bunch of times. Still, I feel this movie being about kung fu, and based in China makes it a reboot. Or something like an unattached sequel.
