Worst Gangster Movie I've Ever Seen
I'm an avid gangster film buff. From Cagney, Bogart and Robinson to Beatty and Dunaway as Bonnie and Clyde, if it's about gangsters I'm all in.
In the modern era, I've thought that films like Good Fellas and Scarface while the stories are excellent, the vivid violence overshadows the storytelling. But, even with that I'm okay.
I bought Public Enemies completely unknowing that it was Dillinger's story, and solely on it having my new favorite actress Marion Cotillard as the female lead. It was a slight let down because I know Dillinger's story very well. I've read and seen other movies about him, not to mention the vast amount of footage of the man.
Scene for scene this was the most boring telling of a mobster I've ever seen. They should have spent more time on creating dramatic scenes then the recreation of the time and place. They shot in the same jail Dillinger escaped from, but in no way created a dramatic setting.
Never in my life have I seen a movie where they took a person who supposedly lived an exhilarating short life, and made it completely dull.
It all boils down to not binding the scenes together. They took highlights of his life, and just mashed them all together. We learn nothing of Dillinger, Purvis or even Hoover. It was just actors playing out moments of these two men's lives. My fave Cotillard literally sounded like she was reading from a cliché cue card.
Terrible awful flick.
