Daniel survived death 3 times in this movie. Inside the treehouse, when he fell from the treehouse, and in the hospital when Esther tried to suffocate him to death.

In the '70s and before filmmakers were willing to kill off child characters without a second thought, but since then I think they've seemed a lot more hesitant. Nowadays they make any excuse they can to spare the child. It's as though they're afraid. I'm actually shocked if anything happens to kids in newer movies. For most people you can do whatever you want to adult humans and teenagers in a movie but children under 15 and animals are off limits. It's kind of strange.
Either way I think this is a very good movie.
Yes, it's actually quite rare for a child character to die in a film these days.
