I don't think so. Keep in mind how much of communication is non verbal and things we pick on. At the beginning Esther was "on", spreading charm all around her, connecting and bonding with both of them. But pretty much from the "F bomb" moment on, Esther decided no longer to give a *beep* about Kate and to kick her out of the picture. Actually, for Esther it was especially triggered by seeing Kate having sex and jealousy, although she only charmed Kate in the first place to get adopted.
She decided to turn it off now, and Kate felt it big time.
Kate was taken by Esther at first, but their bond had no depth, it was superficial and very easy to change. She didn't fundamentally know Esther, so it was enough to see a different face of her for the whole image to get distorted.
That *beep* thing, the way she said things, way she talked, way she clearly talked down to Kate, and then the whole piano thing and what she said to her about her kids, it all showed a mean and callous face. It was enough to fall out of love.
And especially because she was lonely in seeing that, it only made Kate more paranoid and more defensive (so more interested in making a point that Esther was not right.)
The actual problem is that these two people adopted a kid on a whim before spending more time with her and look into her past, that they didn't instantly keep a therapist involved. They just met her, liked her, and finalized the deal.
