Unpopular opinion about characters

So, i see everyone hatin' on the husband but to be honest.
we can see that esther is evil, he cant, he just see the "good side"

The husband: He believes a 9 years old is not capable of kill (and to be honest...usually they are not) thats why he protects her plus, there is a link between the two, esther paints and he do drawings (well..designs) his son is a brat, and the only good "one" is the little girl (i never seen them together, did you?) he had an affair before Daniel was born, he had the guts to tell Kate *beep* Kate almost kill her cute Max. however, getting drunk with Max and Esther in the house at the end?

The Mother: i cant believe how quickly she jumped to the conclusion that her new adopted 9 years old daughter is a killer? Statements

"She threw a fit in school" > she was being bullied, did she get to know that? it wasnt esther fault, they even call her a dog, and ruined her bible

"The f-bomb" sure she say it, so her son did it and in a more aggresive behaviour, and even call her esther a retard what he gets? "no more talking like that"

"she may push brenda" (lets pretend we dont know that she did that..) she quickly assume she did, even when max told her she slipped, Brenda is a brat who bullies esther, yet she doesnt believe esther at all?

in the middle of the film, she takes esther to another level, getting angry because "she broke her arm" (pretend...) and seeing her in the bedroom, makes her angry.?
She doesnt believe her -life- terapeut because she didnt took esther as the "evil one" but told her that she was making her tense, therefore she uses google and search, children who kill, and quickly believes that Esther is a sociopath even though she is 9 years old
To be honest, she is the character that i hated most, if she wanted a child so much, you should know that kids who are in adoption mostly have a ugly background (esther foster parents died in a fire? oh no, she assume she start the fire!)
she gets angry because she knows how to play piano "she has been lying to me all this time" from another point of view again, she can lie of that because she wanted to spend time with kate

in the hospital, esther went to buy a soda, and daniel starts dying (lets assume again that we dont know about esther) and when kate knows, she quickly assume that esther did it and even slap her, like..what.?

i think they made Kate very..strange, maybe if there was a start point where she sees esther doing something bad or..something, to start suspecting about her, but there is none

i cant believe i actually like more Esther than the family
except Max, max was lovely. she was kind, yet brave enough to save his brother twice, and her mother

What do you think about the characters?

forgive me for my english, im learning :)

Great thread and I agree. The Husband was dismissive of his wife, but, she was a drunk who clearly was emotionally unstable. He was trying to give a Ester, a child (he thinks) of a different culture a fair chance to adapt and be happy. The mother is very hypocritical, and irresponsible.

I hated the son. He was an entitled little brat. He was a weakling and a coward, who was rude to Ester from the start for no reason, he killed a bird, was a reclusive little dork, and when Ester confronted him in his bed at night, he peed himself because he was so afraid of her. I was glad that she killed him/smothered him.

Say, do you hear that? It's the sound of the Reaper.....

You're disgusting.

Why?

I think you have fair and good points, Annie. You're forgetting though some important ones: the nun told her she was worried about Esther being violent. She was accused of breaking her arm and dismissed to the living room when she did NOT break her arm. And Esther clearly made her threatening aggression known when she read Kate's diary and taunted her. Although it wasn't stated, she had let her mask slip and was talking as one grownup competing with another.

We know that because we saw it, but again, kate didnt, kate did remember pulling her arm just not "that" strong, and well, it hard to believe that a 9 year old will break her own arm.

Yeah, but again, at that point kate didnt knew about esther age, so for her was still a 9 years old, so fighting with a 9 years old makes kate character a little bit weird

reply

Kate was fighting with someone of superior intelligence, and it's not as though she put up her fists and demanded a boxing ring. Her instincts were telling her something was very serious.

reply

Yes i agree but as a viewer,
as a character i dont, you just cant fight a little girl (i know she is not) just because something tells you that she is dangerous,
kate didnt know anything about esther, she though she was a little girl, then quickly change her mind and put esther as a psycho (yeah she is but you get my point)

but, hell, we need at least one character noticing this things isnt it? or the movie will be..dull

Some good points.

You have to remember that Esther is in love with the dad, and her entire reason for being there is to make him doubt Kate whilst Esther (believes she will) takes Kate's place. So yeah, the dad never saw the behavior Esther had towards Kate.

Kate knew there was something up pretty early on, but it wasn't really until the nun visited with her that she really started being suspicious of Esther. And Esther's entire being, once again, was to take Kate's place, so she did everything she could to cause Kate to break down. And it worked. Esther was extremely cruel to Kate while making Kate seem like this unstable drunk. I also think that Kate was able to sense that Max and her son were being victimized by Esther, and bullied into covering for her.

I hated the son, too, and fell in love with Max. What an adorable girl.

I don't want the world. I just want your half.

Oh yeah i do remember
however im trying to look more as a....character rather than a viewer
from kate point of view she didnt though esther was in love with the...father (forgot his name) .

i mean, they were pretty solid, i just wonder why kate jumped in the "she is the spawn of satan train" so fast,

she throw a fit at school (she was being bullied..did she even knew that?)
she said *beep* (so her son. in a more explicit and mean way)
she plays piano she lied to me (a "kid" lying about something to get a teacher..?)
she push brenda, (yes i know its true) yet max says she didnt, and so the father.

she instantly believes the nun when she said that esther was always there when something bad happened.
-two girls fight esther is there (..she lived in a place full of children)
-about the boy, nobody saw esther pushing him or something, they just know esther was in the same school

quite weird to me....
...of course esther is actually a likeable murderous little psycho...

max was lovely indeed, i laughed when she hid in the..clothe bin.
the son from the beginning ugh.
