CPS never got involved? Weird
When the father brings Esther to the ER for her broken arm. What did the father tell them? If he said his wife did it, CPS wouldn't have even let them leave the hospital.
When the mother smacked the living daylights outta Esther in the hospital with all those witnesses. Again, CPS would have shown up. Healthcare workers by law have to notify CPS, even of suspected child abuse. This they clearly saw.
I understand that introducing this subplot would have compromised the story a bit, but it still stuck out like a sore thumb.
