Film needed narrative for the ending to work

If you’ve the read the book, I think a narrative by Ewan periodically throughout the film would have made the ending much better; ending with John Maddox or Sydney Kroll reading his completed memoirs in their office. The book kept you right to the last paragraph with a twist of an ending, the film just slightly missed the mark.

The film's ending worked for me. I like the fact that Polanski used the same method that he used in Chinatown and The Pianist or even Repulsion. Most of the protagonists—like Ewan's character—have no idea what they got themselves into; so, IMO, a narrative from them would be a bit confusing or maybe unreliable. Watching these people deal with what they're thrown into is more engaging than a narrative. Chinatown's ending worked, and Polanski used the same storytelling method for The Ghost Writer.
