Why didn't Ruth just run for PM herself?

She couldn't be guaranteed that her husband would always listen to her.

Plus it's never really explained why she wants for work for the CIA? Did she think UK was better to align itself with USA foreign policies than stay with Europe?

Well the clear explanation is given by Ruth herself during the last scene of the movie:

I miss Adam all the time. But never more than tonight. Not just 'cause we're meeting to launch his wonderful new book and he should be here to share the joy of his life story with us, but because he was so brilliant at making speeches and I'm so terrible.

reply

Yeah, I got the impression that she just wasn't cut out for it. It takes a lot of charisma and oratorical command be a major politician.

reply

Fair enough.

But even the best orator hires speech writers.

True, but great speeches can be ruined by a poor speaker. It takes both great text and great delivery. You see enough of Lang to know that he would be an extremely effective politician if he was saying the right things. Ruth simply isn't charismatic in any way.

reply

She was the power behind the throne.

Like a lot of politicians...

The Brits tried a female PM once.. you could say it didn't work out so well..

(depends on who you're asking, I suppose)

I don't know, Butchie, instead.

Ha, ha, ha....but to be female she'd have to be human first right?

It actually worked out very well. Of course she had much more charisma than Ruth in this film.

reply

It went well if you're a short sighted moron I suppose.

3 years before Lady Thatcher came to power British Government policy was under the control of the IMF and was being called the "Sick man of Europe". By the time she'd left nearly 12 years later the subversive, communist trade unions were a broken force and Britain was a political and economic powerhouse. If you want to see a disaster, look at the legacy of Blair and Brown.

reply

Yeah, sure buddy. Thanks for the complete lack of sources to back up your argument. Never mind the fact the Britain's entire manufacturing industry was (and still is) devastated.

reply

If you think that British manufacturing at that time was so great, compare the Morris Marina to the VW Golf. My source by the way was living through it.

reply

So your evidence is entirely anecdotal? Typical conservative apologist. One only has to look at the spiraling income inequality stemming from the eighties to see the legacy of the short sighted fools you idolise.

reply

Ruth didn't run for PM because as many have stated she didn't have the desire and charisma to become one. It takes a special person to get elected. She was also a woman the labour party probably wanted a woman. Also with Lang as prime minister she can go out meet her handler and communicate with CIA. As prime minister she would have been followed and watch over day and night. Also if she became PM someone would have probably check on her past and find her connections to Emmett.

She knew that she was the one with the brain and the connections. Mr. Lang knew that if he wanted to continue moving up in government he needed her and her connections.
